Instruction for Application of X-891 Steel Drum Coating

  1. Pretreatment:
  The surface of steel drum should be free of any rust, oil and impurity. It is better to proceed with rust removing, degreasing and phosphating treatments in advance. With regard to cold rolled steel drums not available for degreasing and phosphorization, it would be applicable to remove the oil by means of roasting or manual scrubbing with 200# solvent gasoline. Nevertheless, attentions must be attached to the environmental protection as well as the health of employees.
  2. Painting Methods
  Both spray painting (aerated and high-pressure airless spraying) and spinning cup spraying are available. It would be applicable to adopt brush painting if the condition is not permitted. However, the painting must be completed in one time. Shuttle painting on the coat surface is not permitted.  
  3. Painting Viscidity
  Color Coating: approximately 20-25s (Tu-4 cup, 25℃ )
  Transparent Coating: approximately 15s (Tu-4 cup, 25℃ )
  Specific painting viscidity shall be determined as per different painting methods, painting equipments, equipment dimensions, pressure, flow rates, fan section, nozzle sizes and ambient temperatures through experiments.
  4. Application
  X-891 is composed of components A and B, which should be kept way from the moisture and properly sealed during the process of storage and application.   Furthermore, it also adopts the thinner which is free of any hydroxyl group. Component A and B must be mixed up thoroughly and uniformly as per the proportion of 1:1 before the addition of special thinner for further mixing. After that, the coating shall be placed for 15 minutes to remove any air brought in by the mixing, and facilitate the initial reaction between the two components prior to application. As both components may take the solid form through mixing, it is a must to proceed with the batching as per fixed quantity. The well batched coating must be used up within 3 hours and 6 hours respectively in summer and winter; otherwise, it may yield to low molecular polymerization to the extent of loss of workability prior to curing. When spray painting equipment is used at the temperature of lower than 25℃ , it would be applicable to immerse the spray gun and both inlet and outlet of feeding pipe in the thinner if the application is to be continued within several hours or on the next day. If the temperature is higher than 25℃ , it is a must to clean the pipeline of spray painting equipment with special thinner upon the completion of application (remaining 891 thinner inside the pipeline has no adverse effect on common amido baking painting and epoxy coating); otherwise, residual coating would become cured.      
  Furthermore, make sure the surface of steel drums to be coated is dry in case of application; otherwise, the moisture remaining on the steel drum surface upon the completion of painting may incur corrosion or other damages to the coat. In case of excessive ambient humidity at the time of application, immature superficial drying for the coating is apt to cool down the coat surface, and thus incurs the mist on the paint film due to the absorption of moisture. It is better to bake the steel drum, and proceed with the coating while it is still hot under such circumstances.  
  5. Solidifying
   X-891 series steel drum coating belongs to bicomponent ambient temperature solidified coating, of which, the film is formed through the addition cross linking and solidifying reaction between the two components as contained in it either at ambient temperature or under the condition of low-temperature roasting. In case full contact with oxygen, interior coat of the steel drum can acquire superficial dryness and thorough dryness respectively at the lead time of 10 minutes and 30 minutes when placed at ambient temperature ( 25℃ ). The higher temperature is, the faster solidifying would be. However, the solidifying time would be significantly extended if the temperature is below 10℃ . Therefore, many coopery plants prefer to solidify the 891 coating applied to the steel drums by roasting it for 10 minutes at the temperature of 180℃ . It is reported that effect is so satisfactory. It is better for those manufacturers without roasting equipments to proceed with the bottom closing for steel drums as per weather conditions several days after the X-891 coating is applied, so as to ensure the thorough solidifying with full contact with oxygen.
