Instruction for Applying the X-622 Steel Drum Interior Coating

  1. Pretreatment
  The surface of steel drum should be free of any rust, oil and impurity. It is better to proceed with rust removing, degreasing and phosphating treatments in advance. With regard to cold rolled steel drums not available for degreasing and phosphorization, it would be applicable to remove the oil by means of roasting or manual scrubbing with 200# solvent gasoline. Nevertheless, attentions must be attached to the environmental protection as well as the health of employees.     
  2. Painting Methods
  Available painting methods include brush painting, spray painting (aerated spray painting and high pressure airless spray painting), spinning cup painting and roll painting. 
  3. Painting Viscosity
  Brush Painting: approximately 30s (Tu-4 cup, 25℃ )
  Aerated painting: approximately 20s (Tu-4 cup, 25℃ )
  High Pressure Airless Painting: approximately 25s (Tu-4 cup, 25℃ )
  Spinning Cup Painting: approximately 30s (Tu-4 cup, 25℃ )
Roll Painting: approximately 30s (Tu-4 cup, 25℃ )
Specific painting viscidity shall be determined as per different painting methods, painting equipments, equipment dimensions, pressure, flow rates, fan section, nozzle sizes and ambient temperatures through experiments.
  4. Dilution
  As the pigment as contained in any color coating may subject to the gradual sinking after a certain period of storage, it must to uniformly mix the coating of original packing prior to the dilution with X-622 active thinner (this is especially applicable to the coating packed with 200 liter steel drums that have been kept in storage for a long time; therefore, if the coating in large-scale packing is to be stored for a prolonged time, it is better to place the steel drum horizontally, and roll it for several times on weekly basis). Once the thinner is added, it is necessary to mix the coating uniformly, and wait for 10 minutes prior to application (this is expected to remove any air brought in during the process of mixing).      
  5. solidifying
  Some volatile solvents contained in X-622 steel drum interior coating may be vaporized instantly if the coating film is formed so quickly at high temperature. As a result of it, vaporized solvents may poke the coating film to form pinhole or incur blistering inside the film, and may consequently cause the asymmetrical leveling of the coat. Therefore, it is appropriate to increase the baking temperature gradually or wait for a moment before delivering the coated steel drum to the baking tunnel for baking.      
Standard solidifying condition: solidifying for 45 minutes at a temperature of 182℃ ; reference solidifying condition: solidifying for approximately 15 minutes at a temperature of 225℃
   Note: Roasting temperature and time as required by the thorough solidifying of X-622 coating may vary as per the change of roasting environment, roasting equipment, temperature measuring point, precision of temperature measurement and sensitivity. For instances, one intermediate temperature measuring point of gas fired roasting tunnel adopted by Shanghai Chemical Coopery Plant adopts the 10-minute solidifying at 220℃ . While two temperature measuring points of fuel roasting tunnel adopted by Lingqiao Coopery Plant adopts 5-minute curing at 180℃ and 8-minute solidifying at 230℃ respectively at initial and final stages, imported roasting tunnel as adopted by Qisheng Coopery Co., Ltd adopts 25-minute solidifying at 245℃ . Similarly, Maxim Packaging Container Co., Ltd using imported baking equipments adopts the 6-minute curing at 190℃ and 10-minute curing at 235℃ respectively at initial and final stages. Therefore, each company should make appropriate adjustments to the solidifying conditions as per its own roasting equipment. If the 2C 2B Technique is adopted, it would be applicable to minimize the viscidity, thickness and roasting temperature of the primer coat, and the roasting time should also be shortened appropriately (15 minutes at 180℃ for testing oven).
